Garden Planning - things to think about...

Right, you are thinking about a new garden or landscape design - whether it is a new garden or you want a layout which is more appropriate to your current needs. Perhaps you have just moved in to a property or inherited a ‘builders garden’ but you want to create your own garden, so what next - what are some of the basics that you need to know or consider?

It's about planning!
Like any project, the better it is planned, the better and more certain you will be of the result. It has been said that “Most people don’t plan to fail, they just fail to plan.”  To help, we have listed of some things to think about when considering the design of your new garden.

Survey your garden or plot
Aspect, Areas, Soil, Exposure, Drainage, Topography, Fixed Items, Access & Storage

Think about its use
Consider what you want from the garden or plot and what do you want to do in it

Get some design ideas
Have a look at some of our designs, look in “House & Garden” type magazines, Gardening
mags abd papers or even - look in your neighbours gardens for ideas and inspiration

You will need to survey your garden...

  • Your Garden's Aspect - Is your garden (roughly) north, south, east or west facing?
    - Find this by looking for the sunrise (east) or sunset (west)

  • Areas of the garden - Where is in shade, semi-shade or full sun?
    - You need to know this as it will affect the type of plants you can grow and which areas of the garden receive different light levels - and - at what times of day.

  • Soil Type - Is it heavy, light, dry, wet, acidic, neutral or alkaline?
    - this affects the type of plants you can grow, and what soil adjustment you may need.

  • Exposure - Is the plot exposed to wind, frost, or is it sheltered?
    - One of the essential planning objectives - where to put fences and what type? Do you need to keep prying eyes out? This can also affect the type of plants you can grow and how well they grow!

  • Drainage - Do you have some areas which are water, boggy, damp or very dry areas?
    - Unless you want a bog garden, you may need to condition the soil.

  • Topography - Is your garden level or is it sloping and by how much?
    - If it’s sloping - are you happy keeping it or do you want to terrace it or even level it off?

  • Fixed Items - Are there items that you don’t want to or cannot move or items that can only go in one place? - Sheds, Trees, existing pathways, patios, compost bins etc

  • Area - How big is your garden overall and your new design area if that is different.

  • Lastly - Access and Storage - You should also note how good the access is in and out of your garden, plot or site. Take width measurements of any access routes as you will need this for deliveries and the builders - if you use them. Also, do you have anywhere planned to store bulky items, Paving, Sand, Hardcore, rocks, fencing panels and posts etc.

Once you have done this survey, it should give you a starting place from which to consider what you want from the garden or plot, what do you want to do in it - patio’s & decking, grass & borders, where have you got to get to - paths & steps, do these need lighting, do you need play areas, trellis, arbours, tool sheds, Greenhouse etc., do you need shelter from the wind - or - from neighbours? Have you considered the future of the garden? As the kids grow up? As you get older? Pets?

... and we are all for Making Life Easier

It is essential or at least, very useful to have certain elements in your garden. In any well planned garden, the following will have been considered with extra thought...

Pathways and hard standing - Pathways obviously link areas of the garden and allow clean and safe routes to facilities such as sheds and the greenhouse, not only for yourself but also for the wheelbarrow, mower etc. You may also need areas to store stuff outdoors, a safe area where you can shred, out of season plant, planter or container storage.

Outdoor Water Supply - for easy access to water for hoses and watering

Storage Areas - For example, Sheds for garden tools, Workshops for hobbies, Potting Shed for composts, pots and all the other stuff we collect!

Composting Area - Recycling and to provide a source of free compost.

Safe Outdoor Electricity Supply - Remember to use an RCD or other fast cut-off device!

Pathway Lighting - Extra safety and cheap enough to install when pathways are being built!
